I was told I just had to deal with it
Jessica, California
I worked as a waitress at a local establishment for the last five years. In those five years I was constantly being grabbed by the night manager, he would come up behind me when I would be standing at the counter, doing my checks, etc., He would put his arms in front of me to block my movement and proceed to kiss me on the neck. I asked him to stop many times
I finally told the owner who told me that the night manager had worked there longer than me and I just had to deal with it.
The busboys would constantly grab at the waitresses , and we all knew nothing was ever going to be done. One night one of the busboys picked me up, carried me outside and threw me in the back of a pick up truck, finally getting off me after I kicked him.
I stopped reporting these things because I was basically told nothing would be done.
This year I finally had enough and quit. I was encouraged by all the other waitresses to speak up, as this was happening to them also.
I am in litigation right now, and am experiencing retaliation and backlash. My former employer has shown up at my home, and is spreading rumors all around that I am a slut, etc. All of the waitresses that “supported” me have suddenly disappeared of the face of the earth.
I am trying my best to be strong. I have a great lawyer and think that I will be able to get through this, but it is really really hard. Thanks for reading.

I am so sorry this happend to you. I being a male can understand how hard it must be for women who get trapped in these types of situations. I would encourage you to stay strong and stick it through. Your story is an encouragement to so many others. Other co-workers should have stood up next to you especially the men.

Hi Jessica,
If it means anything at all I’m with you in spirit. When push comes to shove and the spotlight is on them, some people shrivel and turn the other cheek. Other people that I believed in suddenly became ‘amused’ that I was so affected by the whole chain of events. In my case I was also physically abused (bitten twice to the point of blood being drawn) by one colleague in front of other colleagues and the boss and nothing was done about it. On another occasion this same colleague dragged me around the floor like a rag doll whilst another colleague watched and laughed. It’s a ‘climate’ that provides the right nourishment for sexual pests to grow. They start with minor infractions to see how far they can go, and they just keep on pushing the limits. It’s amazing how many people become ‘blind’ whilst it’s going on isn’t it? I wish you the best of justice in your case Jessica… stay strong.
